Journal of Internal Medicine (JIM) dates its origin back to 1863, when Prof. Axel Key, chairman of the Karolinska Institutet, founded the first Swedish medical journal Nordiskt Medicinskt Arkiv, later renamed Acta Medica Scandinavica.
In 1989 the name was again changed, now to Journal of Internal Medicine, and publications in the journal were opened to international contributions. All manuscripts are now handled online, which facilitates submissions and editorial handling of articles. Through the publisher Wiley/Blackwell the time to publication of accepted manuscripts has been substantially shortened, and several articles also have immediate free access. Every issue since the start of the journal in 1863 is now also available on line.
JIM’s impact factor has been continuously rising, and is 5,4 for 2008. The Journal is ranked No. 11 among the 107 journals grouped in the ISI list of journals of Medicine - General and Internal.
JIM aims to serve clinical and pre-clinical researchers by providing a forum for publication of original articles concerning the whole panorama of diseases within internal medicine. This goal is achieved by promoting science within internal medicine as a concept of understanding diseases in their broad, interdisciplinary contexts, from genes and molecules to patients in their particular environment.
JIM also publishes review articles by internationally leading scientists covering the forefront of medical science, and supports international symposia which fall within the scope of the journal.
Since 2005 JIM has its own website where updated information on the journal and its different activities is given
